With the iOS 15.4 update, it is now possible to unlock Face ID with a mask on.
In this article, we will explain how to actually set up the feature and share our impressions of using it.
This feature is only available on the iPhone 12 series or later; it is not available on the iPad or iPhones prior to iPhone 12.

From the start

You may think, “If I had my Apple Watch, I could unlock Face ID with the mask on,” but you can only unlock the lock screen with the Apple Watch.

It could not be used for password applications or in-app authentication for payments.

In addition, Face ID unlocking using the Apple Watch was not very desirable because the specification allows unlocking even with someone else’s face if the face is covered by a mask or other means.

However, the facial recognition with the mask on in this update can of course be used to authenticate within the application, and since it is securely authenticated, it is also secure.

Setup

It can be set from FaceID and Passcode by launching the Settings app in iOS.

*Note that if you are wearing glasses, you will need to make settings for each pair of glasses.

Impressions from actual use

It is convenient to be able to perform facial recognition while wearing a mask.

However, when authenticating with a little mask on, I have the impression that the judgment is a little tougher because the mask is a little foggy or the authentication cannot be done at an angle that would be possible without the mask.

Request

The iPad Pro also uses Face ID, but this time it will not have the ability to unlock the device while wearing a mask.

I don’t know if it is technically possible to use Face ID unlocking with a mask on the iPad since Face ID unlocking with a mask on the iPhone has only been available since iPhone 12, but if it is possible, I would love to see Face ID unlocking with a mask on the iPad Pro as well. If it is possible, we would like to see the iPad Pro have a Face ID unlock function when wearing a mask.
